Factors affecting farmers’ adoption of integrated rice–fish farming systems in the Mekong delta, Vietnam

چکیده
In the Mekong delta, inland fishing and rice production provided a major source of income for rural communities. Since early settlement, the inhabitants have caught fish. Still, fish provides the main source of animal protein in their daily diet (Madan et al. 2005). Fish are caught in flood plains and in rice fields. The wild fish catch has declined since 1970 (Gagauan & Arce 1992), as a result of farmers growing high-yielding rice varieties with two or three crops a year, which requires high doses of agrochemicals and low water levels in the field. The gradual intensification of rice production has resulted in the local overproduction of rice, creating low market prices, while at the same time the rice production costs have increased (Bosma et al. 2005b, 2006). The resulting low profit margins for rice production and the guaranteed food security have encouraged farmers to diversify their rice-based farming systems into farms with multiple components (Table 1). In a majority of the freshwater areas in the Mekong delta, farmers have transformed part of the rice field into ditches for fish culture and dikes for upland crop and livestock production, thus creating a complex farm with sub-systems, sometimes composed of various components (Phong et al. 2007). In doing so, a large variety of goods can be produced for the market on the same farm allowing farming income to become more diversified. The commonly practised concurrent or integrated rice–fish (RF) culture system includes a large ditch surrounding the rice field and as Correspondence Roel H. Adoption Prospects and Challenges of Rice-Cum-Fish Farming Technology in the Low-Land Plains of Southern Nigeria
This study examined the adoption prospects and challenges of rice-cum-fish production technology among rice and fish farmers in selected States in southern Nigeria (Delta, Edo, Lagos and Ondo States). Using questionnaire, data was sought from 720 sampled rice and fish farmers in the selected States. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, logit regression. Results showed that more ...
متن کاملChanges in Social Capital: A Case Study of Collective Rice Farming Practices in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam
This paper describes how the social capital of rice farmers of the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, as manifested in the tradition of collective farming practice, has changed. Collective rice farming persisted for decades, irrespective of critical events that challenged its continuation, due to two key factors: the high need for collective farming to ensure subsistence, and the availability of a closel...
متن کاملComparing the Costs and Benefits of Floating Rice-based and Intensive Rice-based Farming Systems in the Mekong Delta
1 This paper compares financial costs and benefits of floating rice-based and intensive rice farming systems using data from focus group discussions and household survey in four locations in the Mekong Delta. We argue that the net financial benefit per 1000m 2 of integrated floating rice-based farming systems is greater than the net financial benefit of intensive rice farming system. The total ...

Integrated Rice-Fish Farming requires very little input and provides off season employment tofarm labors. It has been observed that combination of rice and fish farming is mutuallybeneficial. Although, in implementation, it can be faced with several challenges and it demandssome requirements. So, this study was conducted to identify challenges and requirements ofIntegrated Rice-Fish Farming in ...
متن کاملProduction of red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) in floating cages in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam: mortality and health management.
The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is one of the most productive aquaculture regions in the world, in which the red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) industry is a small-scale industry that mainly supplies local markets in the delta region. Little is known about the frequency of mortality events and health management in this sector. We describe red tilapia floating cage production systems in the Mekong Delta...
